Chapter 30

Kedrik and Sul'ing followed Du'ala through the thick, warm air as they winged their way to the capital. When they rounded the mountain peak that hid the city, Kedrik got his first look at Dragonhome. Towering spires made of sandstone rose from a patchwork of roofs that stretched out to fill the valley below. Thin columns rose from the buildings in orderly lines all across the city, each one sporting a ringed balcony where dragons landed and took flight. Unbound by gravity, the city was a maze of levels and platforms, with only one common theme.

Flight.

Kedrik watched in awe as dragon after dragon exited one of the tall spires, dropped from the platform, spread its wings and zipped between buildings only to rise again and perch on the ledge jutting from another spire. No roads were necessary for these dragons; they flew between buildings like birds flitted from branch to branch on the trees back home.

As Kedrik drew closer, he heard the sound of dragons calling to one another across the sky. At first, he caught only a few of the melodious strains the dragons let out as they flitted around the city, but soon, the sky was full of music in such a wide range of tunes and melodies that it was hard to keep them all straight.

"They call to each other to let everyone know where they are, and where they're going. It wouldn't do to have them run into one another in the middle of the sky," Du'ala explained.

"It's beautiful," Kedrik said.

Du'ala let out a string of notes and banked, gracefully turning circles in the air, shedding her altitude, heading for a tall spire that clung to the side of the mountain, much like the tower in Amedon. Close behind her, Kedrik and Sul'ing wheeled in the air until they were almost level with the top of the tower, when Du'ala veered off and headed for the city.

"That is my home," she called back to Kedrik as they sped away. "But for now, we go to the elder meeting. It is near the center of the city."

Kedrik followed Du'ala to a spire that stood proudly above the rest, drawing attention to itself by its sheer size. Du'ala snapped her wings and came to a perfect stop at the edge of the platform high above the city. Sul'ing imitated the Clan Mother's perfect landing as Kedrik prepared himself. He tried to copy their movements, but didn't spread his wings properly. He found himself too low and had to tuck his legs beneath him or risk striking the edge of the platform. Without his feet to grasp the edge as Sul'ing and Du'ala had done, Kedrik could not stop his forward motion.

He skidded across the platform and crashed headlong into Sul'ing, pushing her off the opposite side, sending her plummeting towards the city below. She let out a screech but quickly spread her wings, circled the tower and executed a perfect landing on the ledge.

"It takes some getting used to.
